Philosophy

Bring different people move together
We bring people from a range of intersections into our projects and our facilities to move together. We seek individual freedom and expression through dance and movement whilst collectively establishing a strong group dynamic. We believe that a democratic way of being together is possible when we embrace our differences and keep moving together respectfully. Dance is our language.

„We are all human beings and we all start to communicate by bodylanguage, long time before we start to speak, and a long time before we realize if we are white, black, man or woman, long time before we start judging our enviroment. For me dance and movement is the best to train the respect for our own and for other bodies. Without this respect we will never be able to communicate with other human beings, different cultures, different religious groups, men and women.“

The TanzTangente studios are in the Ahornstrasse 24 Berlin Steglitz. We are managed by Daniela Grosset and Nadia Raszewski together with our highly engaged and experienced .dancers and dance pedagogues. TanzTangente is a school for contemporary dance in all its facets as well as a network for interdisciplinary partners that are active within Berlin, Germany and internationally. We challenge methods and concepts through reflection and development; we listen to the unique and ever changing needs of our environment. Through dance and movement we connect, deepen and research content and resources from a variety of disciplines (art, science, politics, education). We want to catalyse and nurture proactive creativity and imagination. Our TanzTangenten team is active in places such as theatres, opera houses, correctional facilities, in schools, shelters for fugitives, care homes and facilities for people who have special needs. Our creative process is rooted in researching and questioning the possibilities and limitations of communicating and moving together. For 3 decades the TanzTangente is shaped by terms such as “Creative Children’s Dance”, “Dance in Schools” and “Community Dance”. Transcending genres we work with humour and most of all passion to have a lot of fun with varied movement possibilities.

Leanore Ickstadt, Irene Sieben and Joanne Pateas (contemporary dancers and students of Mary Wigman) opened the TanzTangente in 1981 in Steglitz. TanzTangente is one is the oldest and longest standing schools for contemporary dance in Berlin in constant flux between tradition and innovation.

Since the get go these three women have pioneered diversity within expressions of dance and mediated these to professionals and laymen.

From the outset we have provided space for international exchange, further development and research besides supporting productions and presentations of dance art. Known international dancers such as Ismael Ivo, Bill T. Jones, Arnie Zane and Helmut Gottschild have danced on the TanzTangente studio stage.

In 2003 the TanzTangente was taken over by Iris Richter, Claudia Lehmann and Nadja Raszewski. In 2011 TanzTangente moved facilities and since then is managed by Nadja Raszewski and Daniela Grosset.
